IN the belly of the beast
Designed and selected for the International Society of Typographic Designers Competition.
The approach for this artist’s book was to interpret the book, In the Belly of the Beast, through author, Jack Abbott’s perspective of his experience in jail. His book uses very emotive and expressive language, which is illustrated through the treatment of the typography in the interpretation. The artist’s book aimed to visually represent Abbott’s inner thoughts and emotions and also to convey a sense of letter writing, symbolising Abbott’s letters to Norman Mailer. This interpretation, aims to be difficult in some ways to read, reflecting the challenging and confronting content of Abbott’s book.
